The story of Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer Fort was founded in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal and rises from the desert in yellow sandstone. Unlike most Indian forts it is still lived in, with homes, shops and temples inside its walls.

The town below grew rich on the caravan trade, and its merchants built elaborate havelis such as Patwon ki Haveli. Gadisar Lake, a man-made reservoir, once supplied the city’s water.

Beyond town, Kuldhara is a village abandoned in the early nineteenth century, and the Sam Sand Dunes are the classic place to watch the sun go down over the Thar.
