Agra was a capital of the Mughal emperors for much of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and its monuments trace that dynasty: Agra Fort, Akbar’s Tomb at Sikandra and, on a bend of the Yamuna, the Taj Mahal — built by Shah Jahan as a tomb for his wife Mumtaz Mahal.
